Netley

Historic village with Netley Abbey ruins and the Royal Victoria Country Park on Southampton Water.

Netley is a village on Southampton Water, south of Eastleigh and east of Southampton. It is best known for two major heritage attractions: Netley Abbey and the Royal Victoria Country Park.

Netley Abbey is among the most complete surviving Cistercian abbey ruins in southern England. Founded in 1239 under Henry III, the ruins are in the care of English Heritage and open to the public. They are a popular spot for walks and picnics.

The Royal Victoria Country Park occupies the grounds of the former Royal Victoria Military Hospital — a vast 19th-century complex built to treat casualties of the Crimean and other wars. The park sits on Southampton Water, with coastal walks, woodland trails, a miniature railway, and a cafe. The remains of the hospital chapel still stand as a landmark.

Netley has a railway station on the Southampton–Portsmouth line, and there are sailing clubs on the shore. The area has a mix of residential streets and 19th-century character.

It's a genuinely attractive destination — the combination of the abbey ruins and the country park makes it well worth a visit from Eastleigh (about 15–20 minutes by car or bus).
